How is agate stone formed and where is agate found?

Just as freshwater pearls must go through a formation process, so must agates. The process starts in a cavity in a rock. These cavities are found especially in solidified lava, where trapped gas has created these cavities, which over time are filled with mineral water that deposits fine colorful layers of chalcedony and opal. This process is the starting point for the formation of a beautiful agate stone.

The process continues over a long period, with water containing dissolved chalcedony and opal filling up the cavities and depositing layer upon layer of these minerals as quartz. When enough time has passed, the most beautiful agate stone appears in all the colors of the world.

You may experience that there is a cavity in an agate stone, which is quite common. These cavities in the agate can be filled with the finest quartz crystals or Amethysts inside. These agate stones, which have a cavity in the center of the stone, are called Geodes. If the cavity is filled, the stone is called an almond.
