Selenite is a form of gypsum (the mineral gypsum crystal) and is characterized by its silky-smooth luster and almost translucent appearance. The name comes from the Greek word selēnē, meaning "moon," due to the stone's shiny, moon-like surface.
It is a very soft stone that can easily be scratched, and is therefore mostly used for decoration, healing, and less exposed jewelry components.
