DIY Guide – Make a Peyote Stitch Ring

Make your own unique ring with the classic peyote stitch technique. With our easy guide, you can quickly learn how to sew a beautiful finger ring with Miyuki beads and peyote card.

Materials we used:

  • 3 colors Miyuki Delica 11/0
  • Peyote Stitch card
  • Miyuki beading thread
  • Miyuki needles
  • How to do it – step by step:

    1. Preparation

    • Fold the peyote card in half.
    • Take a small bead (can be any) and use it as a stopper bead.
    • Thread the needle with Miyuki beading thread and put the stopper bead on.
  • 2. Start on the card

    • Insert the needle into the first hole on the card so the stopper bead is secure.
    • Proceed to the next diagonal hole and then into the first hole of the notches on the card.
  • 3. Sew the first row

    • Take your first bead on the needle and sew through the next hole.
    • Continue in the same way until the ring has the width you desire.
  • 4. Building the pattern

    • When you reach the end, you should take a new bead onto the needle and sew through the beads that are now “sticking up” on the card.
    • This causes the beads to lie close together in the classic peyote pattern.
  • 5. Remove the card

    • Once you have sewn a nice piece, you can take the card off (or leave it on if you find it easier).
    • To remove the card: loosen the stopper bead and gently pull the thread out hole by hole.
  • 6. Find the right length

    • Measure the ring on your finger or a ring mandrel.
    • You can choose to create patterns along the way – for example, we have made a clear section in the middle to add sparkle.
  • 7. Sew the ring together

    • Hold the two ends up against each other and see if the beads match.
    • If they don't match, adjust with an extra row or remove one.
    • Sew the ends together with zigzag movements. Wait to tighten the thread until you are completely finished.
  • 8. Finishing

    • When all the beads are sewn together, pull the thread tight.
    • Finish by passing the thread back and forth through your work a few times to secure it.
  • Tip:

    • Start simple, but feel free to play with color combinations and patterns as you become more comfortable with the technique.
    • A bead mat makes the work even easier.
