Selenite is a form of gypsum (the mineral gypsum crystal) and is characterized by its silky soft luster and almost transparent appearance. The name comes from the Greek word selēnē, meaning "moon", due to the stone's shiny, moon-like surface.

It is a very soft stone that can easily be scratched and is therefore mostly used for decoration, healing, and less exposed jewelry parts.
