Which types of stones are classified as semi-precious stones

A rule of thumb is that all stones other than diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires are classified as semi-precious stones.

There are countless semi-precious stones, some of the most well-known that you can also find here on the webshop are Agate, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Lapis Lazuli, Moonstone, Opal, Sunstone, Rose Quartz, Tourmaline and Zirconia stones.
As mentioned above, the boundaries between what is a precious stone and a semi-precious stone are not very clear, and there is no scientific basis for why some stones are called precious stones and others semi-precious stones.
For example, emeralds consist of different varieties of beryl, as does aquamarine. But emeralds are a precious stone, while aquamarine is a semi-precious stone. In the past, they were categorized based on how rare they were. Today, it is not uncommon to see natural pearls and semi-precious stones such as freshwater pearls and amethyst be more expensive than low-quality precious stones.

What types of stones are classified as gemstones

When it comes to gemstones, this classification today consists of four types of stones. Diamond, Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire.
Historically, the classification of gemstones was primarily based on the value, rarity, and desirability of these diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. When gemstones are classified and valued today, several parameters come into play. Among others, the stone's clarity, color, cut, rarity, and carat.

From time to time, you may experience that we have a limited stock of gemstones in-house. Primarily, it has been rubies and sapphires that we have been able to procure. However, we are constantly expanding our range, both of semi-precious stones and gemstones.

Briefly about gemstones and semi-precious stones

Gemstones are formed from minerals, stones, and organic material, which are then processed by being cut, polished, and made into gemstones used in jewelry making. Here, the gemstones are used in rings, earrings, necklaces, and many other types of jewelry. The division between gemstones and semi-precious stones dates back to ancient times, where the value of the stones was the primary categorization factor for which stones were gemstones and which were semi-precious stones. Since diamonds, rubies, emeralds, and sapphires were rarer, this also meant that the demand was greater and therefore also the higher price.

The story today, however, is different. Now gemstones and semi-precious stones are judged by the same parameters, and therefore you will also experience that what was previously called a semi-precious stone today can be a more valuable and rarer stone than, for example, diamonds.
Therefore, you may also hear many say that the importance of whether a stone is a gemstone or a semi-precious stone is not so significant in terms of value and rarity.
This also means that when you are going to buy gemstone pearls for jewelry, you should not worry too much about whether it is one or the other.
All gemstone pearls are valuable and not only seen through the economic pearl glasses. Gemstones and semi-precious stones have different meanings and values depending on who you are and how they are used in jewelry.
We have a small rule of thumb which is that colors are of a subjective nature and a piece of jewelry is often associated with emotions.

Beads, Stones & Beads

Jewelry beads come in different sizes and types. Therefore, it can also be difficult when it comes to buying beads for jewelry. First and foremost, it is important to know that with us, beads, semi-precious stones, and precious stones are under the same category. This is because there are different perceptions of what is what, and for us, a precious stone can be considered a bead, just as a bead can also be considered a precious stone.

However, there are certain products that we have categorized as beads, and these include, among others, our Glass beads, Miyuki Beads, Matubo Super Duo, Seed Beads and various natural beads, which will continuously be a changing assortment, just like the rest of our bead products for jewelry, will change according to season and jewelry trends.
We have, among others, our three super popular semi-precious stone collections with Freshwater Pearls, Hematite and Tourmaline, which you can get at some of Denmark's best prices. At the same time, we have categorized our freshwater pearls based on our Grade scale, which guides you regarding the quality you as a customer can expect from our beads.

You can read more about the grade scale here:Grade Scale
