A rule of thumb is that all stones other than diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires are referred to as semi-precious stones.

There are countless semi-precious stones, some of the most well-known that you can also find here on the webshop are Agate, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Lapis Lazuli, Moonstone, Opal, Sunstone, Rose Quartz, Tourmaline and Zirconia stones.
As mentioned above, the boundaries between what is a precious stone and a semi-precious stone are not very clear, and there is also no scientific basis for why some stones are called precious stones and others semi-precious stones.
For example, emeralds consist of different varieties of beryl, as does aquamarine. But emeralds are a precious stone, whereas aquamarine is a semi-precious stone. In the past, they were categorized according to how rare they were. Today, it is not unusual to see natural pearls and semi-precious stones such as freshwater pearls and amethyst being more expensive than low-quality precious stones.

When it comes to gemstones, this classification today consists of four types of stones. Diamond, Ruby, Emerald and Sapphire.
Historically, the classification of gemstones was primarily based on the value, rarity, and desirability of these diamonds, rubies, sapphires, and emeralds. When gemstones are classified and valued today, several parameters come into play. Among others, the stone's clarity, color, cut, rarity, and carat.

From time to time, you may experience that we have a limited stock of gemstones in-house. Primarily, it has been rubies and sapphires that we have been able to procure. However, we are constantly expanding our range, both of semi-precious stones and gemstones.

Gemstones are formed from minerals, stones and organic matter, which are subsequently processed by being cut, polished and turned into jewelry stones used in jewelry making. Here, the gemstones are used in rings, earrings, necklaces and many other types of jewelry. The division of gemstones and semi-precious stones dates back to ancient times, when the stones' value was the primary categorization factor for which stones were gemstones and which were semi-precious stones. Because diamonds, rubies, emeralds and sapphires occurred more rarely, this also meant that demand was greater and therefore the price was also higher.

Today, however, the story is different. Now gemstones and semi-precious stones are judged by the same parameters, and therefore you will also find that what used to be called a semi-precious stone can today well be a more valuable and rare stone than, for example, diamonds.
That's why you will also hear more people say that whether a stone is a gemstone or a semi-precious stone isn't so important in terms of value and rarity.
This also means that when you're buying gemstone beads for jewelry, you shouldn't focus too much on whether it's one or the other.
All gemstone beads are valuable, and not only when viewed through the economic bead lens. Gemstones and semi-precious stones have different meanings and values, depending on who you are and how they're used in jewelry.
