Graded quality guide to freshwater pearls

Here at Uniq Perler, you will from time to time find that some of our freshwater pearls are stamped with e.g. Grade AAA, Grade AA, Grade A. Now you might be thinking? -"What exactly is wrong with that and what does it really mean?"
Read this guide we have made for you and learn a little bit more about freshwater pearls and their quality stamp.

Grade E/Elite

Grade E freshwater pearls are the pinnacle of freshwater pearls.

We have listed 6 points that characterize the Grade E pearl:

  1. The pearl has a true natural round shape - Less than 5% deviation from spherical shape.
  2. The pearl has an extraordinary luster - Incredibly sharp luster with high reflection.
  3. The reflected light from the pearl appears as sharp and characteristic edges.
  4. The occurrence of spots on the freshwater pearl is between 0-5% on each individual pearl surface.
  5. Strings of pearls appear clean and uniform upon inspection of the string.
  6. Almost perfect matching of the pearls on the string - Minimal variation in color, tone, luster, shape or size between the pearls.

Grade aaa

Grade AAA is the next in line and is in many ways close to being almost as perfect a pearl as the Grade E pearl.

Here are 6 things that characterize the Grade AAA pearl:

  1. The shape of the pearl most often appears as close to perfectly round.
  2. The pearl has an excellent luster - Sharp reflection.
  3. The reflected light from the pearl is sharp, where the edges can appear satin.
  4. The occurrence of spots on the freshwater pearl is less than 5% on each pearl surface
  5. Strings of pearls will be clean and pleasing to the eye upon inspection.
  6. Almost perfect matching of the beads on the string - Little to no variation in color, tone, luster, shape or size.

Grade aa+

Then we have the Grade AA+ quality stamp
These pearls are a small step down the quality ladder, but but but, these pearls are still of an insanely good quality and the difference from Grade AA+ to AAA is not huge.

Here are 6 things that characterize the Grade AA+ pearl:

  1. The pearls are round, while some pearls can be off-round (oval-shaped).
  2. Very high gloss - The pearl has a very good reflection.
  3. The reflected light in the pearl appears bright and clear, with some blurred edges.
  4. The occurrence of spots on the freshwater pearl is less than 5-10% on each pearl surface.
  5. Strings will mostly be clean to the eye upon inspection.
  6. Very good matching of the pearls on the string - Little to no variation in color, tone, luster, shape or size

Grade A

Then we've come to the icing on the cake and that's our Grade A pearls. Again, these freshwater pearls are of really fine quality.

Here are 6 things that characterize the Grade A pearl:

  1. Some round beads, but also an equal amount of off-round beads on the string.
  2. Good shine - The pearls have a really nice reflection.
  3. The reflected light in the pearl can be blurry.
  4. The incidence of spots on the freshwater pearl is less than 50% on each pearl surface.
  5. The beads on the strings have stains.
  6. Good matching of the pearls on the string - There are variations in colour, tone, shine, shape or size.
