Why choose a flush cutter?

A flush cutter is a pair of cutting pliers where one side of the blades is completely flat. This gives a straight and smooth cut, so the end of the wire doesn't poke out, scratch your skin, or catch on your clothes.

The difference between a flush cutter and regular cutting pliers

Regular cutting pliers have angled blades on both sides. They cut just fine, but leave a small point on both ends of the wire, which you often have to file down afterward. With a flush cutter, you turn the flat side toward your jewelry piece – giving you a neat, straight cut right away, with the point ending up on the small piece you're throwing away anyway.

It's especially good for
  • Pins and Eye Pins, when making eyes for earrings and pendants
  • Wire wrapping, where the wire needs to be cut close and neatly
  • Jewelry wire and soft metal wires, where you want a clean finish
When is another pair of pliers better?

The fine, flat blades are made for precision – not for hard steel. Memory wire and other hard steel wire can nick the blades, so for these you should use pliers made for hard wire. If you're cutting thicker wire, regular cutting pliers are also a good choice, since the angled blades are more robust.

In short: if you want neat finishes without sharp ends, a flush cutter is the right choice. Your jewelry becomes more comfortable to wear, and you avoid having to file the ends afterward.
