Selenite is a form of gypsum (the mineral gypsum crystal) and is characterized by its silky-soft luster and near-transparent appearance. The name derives from the Greek word selēnē, meaning "moon," due to the stone's shimmering, moon-like surface.
It is a very soft stone that can easily be scratched and is therefore mostly used for decoration, healing, and less exposed jewelry findings.
