Baroque freshwater pearls - The popular choice

One of the most popular and commonly seen freshwater pearls in contemporary design jewelry. Baroque pearls are characterized by their irregular and non-spherical shape. This means you will get a very special expression in your jewelry if you choose to mix it with either the smaller or larger baroque freshwater pearls.

No two baroque freshwater pearls are alike in expression. This is also one of the reasons why they are some of the most trending pearls these days, where it's all about standing out.

Keshi freshwater pearls - The beautiful natural pearl with luster

Keshi freshwater pearls are another type of freshwater pearls, characterized by their incredible luster.

In appearance and shape, they can somewhat resemble baroque freshwater pearls, but where a keshi freshwater pearl stands out is in the extraordinary luster that each individual pearl possesses.

Another aspect where keshi freshwater pearls differ from others is that they are often produced by chance. Often, pearls are cultured, which means humans have had a hand in the production of freshwater pearls. In the case of keshi freshwater pearls, humans have not inserted mollusk tissue into the shell. Here, freshwater pearls form by an "accident," meaning nothing is inserted into the shell to kickstart the pearl production process.

Biwa freshwater pearls - The natural pearl with history

This type of freshwater pearls are the ancestors of what we today know as freshwater pearls. For decades, freshwater pearls were called Biwa pearls because the legendary Kokichi Mikimoto perfected freshwater pearl production and later almost had exclusive rights to distribute Biwa freshwater pearls worldwide.

When you buy Biwa baroque pearls today, you are buying freshwater pearls produced in Lake Biwa, which is located in Japan. This is characteristic of Biwa freshwater pearls. They are the ancestors of today's freshwater pearl designation, and various forms of Biwa pearls are still produced.

What makes them unique is that Biwa freshwater pearls are only produced in Lake Biwa in Japan.

Rice freshwater pearls - The beautiful and charming natural pearl

Another type of freshwater pearls you will find with us are our rice freshwater pearls. They come in the incredibly charming rice shape, which can vary in different sizes. Rice freshwater pearls are typically cultured like many other freshwater pearls in the world.

Rice freshwater pearls stand out because they are often available in very small sizes, which can give your jewelry an elegant expression.

Potato freshwater pearls - Your path to a bargain buy

If you know freshwater pearls, then you also know what a potato freshwater pearl is. The beautiful shape of freshwater pearls is a pearl that can jazz up any piece of jewelry.
What is special about potato freshwater pearls is that they can easily be mistaken for certain akoya pearls, which are the cream of the crop within freshwater pearls.

It also means that you get a pearl that looks like a million for a fraction of the price. In fact, this is where you can make some of the biggest savings relative to the value of the pearl. On average, potato freshwater pearls cost one fifth of what comparable more expensive freshwater pearls cost. This is solely because their shape does not fit into the three usual categories of freshwater pearls, which are spherical, baroque, and symmetrical pearls.

Coin freshwater pearls - The special and round natural pearls

Coin freshwater pearls are where you can really get to create jewelry that stands out from others.

Coin freshwater pearls are characterized by their coin shape, hence their name, coin. This shape is achieved by freshwater pearl farmers inserting a piece of flat mollusk tissue into a mussel and otherwise letting the mussel and time do their work.

In the end, it results in a perfectly coin-shaped coin freshwater pearl, which is so incredibly different from all other types of pearls that exist today.

Harlequin freshwater pearls - Diamond natural pearl

Here you will find one of the best-selling freshwater pearls with us. Our elegant harlequin freshwater pearls.

The shape is so unique and gives an expression to your jewelry that is unlike any other form of pearls and gemstones. Our harlequin freshwater pearls are, as mentioned, characterized by the incredible diamond shape they have. The pearl is again a cultured freshwater pearl and here a truly incredible invention has been made when it comes to shapes of pearls. Harlequin freshwater pearls are some of the most difficult pearls to produce and require both patience and the skilled hand of a freshwater pearl farmer to achieve the perfect result.

How are freshwater pearls made?

The majority of the world's freshwater pearls today are classified as cultured pearls, which means they are produced on freshwater pearl farms around the world. The process is characterized by a mussel receiving between 24 to 32 pieces of mollusk tissue implanted into it. This process is called nucleation and takes between 2-7 years before freshwater pearls are produced that can be used for jewelry.

When the freshwater pearls are to be harvested, the pearls are sorted into categories based on size, shape, color, and quality. After this, the pearls are sold either as loose freshwater pearls or as strands, which are then sent out into the world to be used in jewelry.

Freshwater pearls for jewelry making

Today, freshwater pearls are primarily used for jewelry making. Here they are one of the most popular additions to jewelry.

It is not uncommon to be able to go to a jewelry store and find freshwater pearl earrings or necklaces with freshwater pearls. One of today's biggest trends is pearl necklaces made of freshwater pearls. Among other things, large baroque freshwater pearls have made their way into the fashion world because they give this unique and different look.

Generally speaking, freshwater pearl jewelry is a timeless piece that over time can achieve incredible value if the pearls are of good quality and you take care of them.
